What Do Marriage Books Miss about Marriage?

I have to confess that I'm a writer of a marriage book who hates marriage books and the reason I do is because I don't think that the average marriage book actually gets down to the level where the difficulty actually takes place. My whole purpose in writing What Did You Expect? [Redeeming the Realities of Marriage] is to challenge the unrealistic expectations of couples that have led to the difficulty that couples face.

Situations Are Not the Cause of Marriage Problems

It's not about situations and locations. It's not about finances and sex and parenting and what's the role of a husband or what's the role of a wife. Rather than the cause of problems, those are the locations where the problems exist and live out.

The problems are at a deeper level. Every husband and every wife carries into their marriage something inside of them that's destructive to relationships. The Bible names it. It's sin. Sin in its fundamental form is anti-social and when you get at that, when you understand that, when you really become convinced that you are your greatest marriage problem, you're on the pathway to change. And that's exactly What Did You Expect? [Redeeming the Realities of Marriage] helps you to do. It helps you to be honest about you and then, to be excited about commitments that begin to set you on a pathway of change.
