You know, one of the things that people always want to know when you write this kind of book is if you've always done these things in your marriage. Well, the answer to that is, fundamentally, no. I think the reason that I'm able to relate to people's struggle out there and sort of put words to their thoughts and their desires and their concerns and their pain is because I've been there. I think Luella and I have struggled in all the ways that couples struggle.
Marriage Is Lived in Ten Thousand Little Moments
Let me say something about that. See, I don't think that marriage struggles are about big, dramatic moments. We don't live in big, dramatic moments very much. Most of us only make three or four big decisions in our lives where we won't be written up in history books.
Several decades after we die, the people we leave behind will struggle to remember the events of our lives. We live in the utterly mundane. The character of a marriage is not built in three big moments. It's built in ten thousand little moments and that's part of the problem -- that we back away from the importance of those little moments because they're little moments.
Well, the little moments of a marriage are important precisely because they're little moments and that's where we live. And Luella and I have struggled in those little moments. And we've learned to be honest about those struggles and learned to reach out for the help that only changes only Jesus can give us.
