One of the things I really love about the way the Bible talks about life is that it's shockingly honest while being gloriously hopeful at the same time; and the hope doesn't diminish the honesty and the honesty doesn't cancel the hope. And I think it's real important for couples in marriage.
Why the Bible Tells Such Dark Stories
There are stories in the Bible that are so convoluted and distorted and dark, you're almost embarrassed to read them. If they were in a paperback novel, you wouldn't pick it up. Now, why does God do this? Because God wants us to know how dark and difficult sin can actually be and yet, at the same time, wants us to understand that there is no difficulty deeper than what the grace of Jesus is able to reach.
Maybe the scariest thing for couples is to face adultery. That's a terrible thing that rips at the fabric of the trust that needs to be in a marriage, but the beautiful thing about the grace of Jesus is that it promises us fresh starts and new beginnings.
It's not just that I become more knowledgeable. It's that something transforms inside of me. I become a very different person. I've sat with men who've done terrible things, who literally become different people because God begins to change the character and quality of their hearts.
They want different things. They find joy in different things. Demanding, angry men become serving and giving and encouraging and gentle; and they no longer live for their own satisfaction. They actually begin to find joy in serving and loving another human being. There is no pit so deep that Jesus isn't deeper.
