I love talking about moms. I have such a high esteem for the office, the institution, the position of motherhood. I mean, ladies, think about this. What could possibly be more important than to be God's tool to the forming of a human soul?
The Utter Dependence of a Child
Wow, that you have this child that is so dependent when you first bring it home from the hospital - him or her - that if you laid that child in a crib for eight to ten days, they would die. They have no ability to take care of themselves. And you are going to form a worldview, you're going to form a view of self and identity, you're going to form a morality, you're going to form a spirituality in that child.
What beautiful, beautiful work that is. And, ladies, I think sometimes, we just don't give you the credit that you deserve. It's a hard task, but it's a beautiful thing. God, through you, is intending to place His hands on your children. You're His representative. You're the look on His face. You're the tone of His voice. You are the touch of His hand. What a high, holy calling that is.
Now you say, "Well, Paul, that sounds a lot more attractive than what I do every day." Look, it's a messy, dirty, hard job. And because that is, because it's so exhausting, it's so demanding, it requires you to do so many despicable things you wouldn't otherwise do.
Parenting Will Expose Your Heart
Parenting will expose your heart. It will pull out of you your idolatry. It'll pull out of you your envy and your bitterness and your anger. So ladies, you got to know you're not the messiah of your children. You're like your children. With them, you stand in need of a Messiah who can strengthen you, who can give you life, who can grace you with what you need at the time that you need it.
As you're walking down the hallway again to clean up that mess, to change a diaper, to break up a fight, to have a troubling conversation with your teenager, tell yourself again, "I am not alone because my life has been invaded by Emmanuel, the Savior, the Lamb, the King is with me and He will give me His grace.
And He does not judge me anymore based on my failure, my sin, and my weaknesses because all that's been covered by the blood of Jesus. I can run to Him, and I can find mercy and grace in my time of need - mercies that are wonderfully new every morning.
