The whole central point of this book is that suffering is never neutral. The lie that people buy into in suffering is suffering as passive experience. "I'm not in control of my suffering. I just have to ride my way through it and hope there's something left of me at the end."
You Bring Things to Your Suffering
Suffering is anything but passive because you bring things to your suffering that determine the way that you will suffer. There [are] things that you believe, things that you think are true, things that you'll say to yourself that will shape your experience of suffering. You will either fall into traps or you will embrace comforts and which way you go in a given moment in your suffering will determine how deep and how dark that suffering actually is.
