A lot of us -- maybe most of us -- live frenetic lives. Busy, busy, busy lives. You know, it's not always bad busyness. I can remember when our four children were home. My wife and I would discuss all the things we needed to do and all the places we needed to be with our four kids, and it didn't seem possible in one week.
When the Whole Week Flies By
I used to tell people, when my kids were young, I felt like I began putting on my pants on Monday and it was Saturday before I got them on. The whole week had just flown by. It was just like craziness and so, what you have to do is you have to fight for space to remember. You have to fight for space to reflect. You have to fight for quiet.
There's a way in which no one can do that for you. You have to nail that into your life somehow, some way. Meditation is a very important -- I would argue, profoundly important -- spiritual discipline that needs to be in all of our lives because we're so forgetful and in our forgetfulness, we begin to follow all of those idols that are all around us.
Now, I'm going to give you my opinion here. I think, absolutely, the best time to do that is the morning because, I mean, a lot of us by evening, we're brain-dead. I mean, you're just three steps above a carrot. You know, you don't have anything left.
Too Dead to Follow Netflix
My wife and I will be watching something on Netflix and we're both like this. And she'll say, "What'd he just say?" I'll say, "I don't know." She says, "Well, rewind it," because we're just dead. You know how the next episode, the repeat part? I'm so glad they do that.
So I find I just have to be willing to get up earlier than I would normally get up, so there's a little bit of quiet where I can do those things that I said to do, where I can just stop and gaze upon the awesome beauty of the Lord. And I just think, however you do it, you have to fight for that. It has to be intentional or it just never gets into the schedule and you end up cold, and you're just going through the spiritual motions. And in that point, you're really set up for difficulty.
