Well, I've been talking about why I hate parenting. I hate that it takes place in a fallen world. I hate that it's corrupted by my sin. I hate that my children come into the world believing life-destroying lies. I hate that their hearts are kidnapped by idolatry.
Why All of That Drives Me to the Cross
But here's what I love about all of that - that all of that drives me to the foot of the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ. All of that drives me to God's grace because I have no ability to change this world. I have no ability to deliver myself from sin. I have no ability to change the heart of my child. I have no ability to rescue them from their idolatry.
If I could do all those things, I would be the fourth member of the Trinity and Jesus would not have had to come. But I'm not a hopeless parent. I'm a hopeful and courageous parent because my parenting has been invaded by and radically transformed by the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.
There's grace for my struggle. There's grace for my children. Rescuing, transforming, forgiving, delivering grace. And what I want for my parenting is that it would not be a system of law that tells me if I just have the right rules, I can deliver my children from sin. No, I want my parenting to be a culture of grace where sin is revealed, but the Redeemer is esteemed and trusted; and we watch His grace do the work that only His grace can do.
