I am here to declare that I hate parenting. Well, maybe I should say this. There are things that I deeply hate about parenting that I think you should hate, too. Here's the first thing. I hate the fact that parenting takes place in a fallen world between the "already" of our conversion and the "not yet" of our home-going.
A Dramatically Broken World
We live in a world that's dramatically broken. Romans 8 says the whole world groans, waiting for redemption. We live in a world that's in no way operating the way God intended for the world to operate and that complicates parenting in so many ways. We live in a world of disappointment and hurt and danger and temptation and trial. And I don't think you and I have any idea, any concept of what it would be like to parent children in a world that was operating the way God intended.
Listen, the brokenness of your world should make you mad. It should make you dissatisfied. As a parent, you should long for that day when sin and death will die, and the struggles that are so normal to us will not be there anymore. This is something you should hate about parenting and as you parent your children, as you send them out into this broken world, you should weep and you should long for the day when that brokenness will end.
