I'm afraid that there are times where we have a negative response to the community that surrounds us because we tend to think we're just constantly under siege. The most recent one that just melts my brain and makes me think what are we doing is the big furor over the fact that Starbucks has taken the snowflakes off their red Christmas cup and now are just serving a red cup. That has been interpreted by some believers as Starbucks attack on Christmas, a war against Christmas, a war against Christians. I think we just need to get a humble grip.
Starbucks Is Not Attacking Christmas
Now, think about this. Starbucks is not existing to support, encourage, and stimulate Christian Christmas. It's not their mission. And when you interpret that as being more adversarial than it actually is, it creates in you a fighting mentality that can get in the way of what God has called you to do and called you to be.
Oh, there are places where Christianity is under attack. There are places where what we think is morally significant, morally non-negotiable is being negotiated away. And if you're going to live well in your culture, you have to live there with a sense of priority.
Listen, just drink from the red cup and be thankful that you have a Starbucks you can go to. Even that is a blessing. And fight the battles that are important and don't act like you're under siege in places where you're not because that will make you live in an adversarial posture to your culture, rather than an evangelistic mission with your culture.
