I wanted to write a Christmas devotional because of how familiar this story is to us. Now, maybe that sounds weird. Familiarity with the Christmas story is a beautiful thing, but familiarity is a dangerous thing because the more something is familiar to us, the less we pay attention to it.
When Beauty Becomes Familiar
You know, if you're driving down a wooded street for the first time going to work because you just moved to a new community, you're blown away by the beauty of the trees and you're so thankful for the beauty that God created in His world.
Six weeks later, you're pounding on the dash. "This traffic drives me crazy," and you haven't seen a tree for three weeks. I think that for many of us, we quit looking at the Christmas story because we think we know it and there are just profound, beautiful truths and lessons in the story that just need examination. And I feel like this book is meant to be a tour guide to walk you through that story again and say, "Look at this and look at this and look at this," to break through that familiarity that has made us quit looking and quit listening.
