As Joshua was about to lead the children of Israel across the Jordan into fearsome experiences, God said this to him. "I will never leave you or forsake you." I can't think of a huger, more beautiful, more wonderful comfort than that, that the One who rules it all, the One who is generous in grace, the One who has power that I will never have, the One who is faithful, the One who will never be disgusted by my struggle, who will never mock me in my weakness, who will never turn His back on me when I stumble, who has everything I could ever need is always with me, and He's not about to leave.
What That Promise Meant to Me
I can't tell you what that promise meant to me as I went through discouraging, sometimes torturous things, as I still live with the aftermath of the destruction disease has done to my body, as I know I will never be the person I once was.
I run, run, run again to this truth. I am never alone. I'm never alone in my discouragement. I'm never alone in my weakness. I'm never alone in my doubt. I'm never alone in the lack of control I have over processes in my physical body. I'm never alone in moments where people around me don't understand what I'm going through.
I'm never alone. I'm never alone. I'm never alone. I'm never alone. I'm never alone and I've grabbed a hold of that truth with both hands, knowing that as I hold on to that truth, the One who is in the center of that truth holds on to me.
My hope is not just I'm holding onto that truth. My hope is that I am held in His hands and He will never let go of me. I will never leave you or forsake you. What could be sweeter to hear, to understand, to believe, to embrace in suffering than that truth?
