Between the "already" of our conversion and the "not yet" of our home-going, all of us live everyday desperately in need of God's gospel work. The thing that every leader needs to be rescued from is not opposition first. It's not troublesome members in their congregation. It's not a difficult job description.
Every Leader Needs to Be Rescued From Himself
What every leader needs to be rescued from is himself because as long as sin lives inside of me, I am my greatest danger to me; and so, if I'm going to be a tool of God's grace, I need grace. And so, I need to be living in Gospel community with other leaders, communities that are nurturing and comforting and protective.
I need protection from me. I need people who help me see things I wouldn't see by myself, communities that are committed to restoration, that live with this principle I call prepared spontaneity -- that we don't know what's going to happen next, but we know we're under attack and so, we've prepared ourselves for that moment when we're going to need to surround somebody with gospel help, gospel rebuke, gospel comfort.
It's very, very important. Independent, self-sufficient leadership doesn't work. It's a recipe for disaster and so, you can't have a healthy leadership community that just functions like the corporate board of religious institution because it's got to be a gospel community as well. Because if you're going to do gospel work, you will need gospel work. If you're going to be the tool to ignite a community of grace, you've got to live in a community grace. That's the need of every leader, no matter how mature, no matter how influential.
