Is God Really For You?

Are you in a moment of temptation right now, or have you experienced temptation recently? Are you experiencing some type of sexual suffering right now, or have you recently? (If not, I'm sure you are close to someone who is.) As sexual beings with sinful hearts, we should anticipate attraction to things that God prohibits. Similarly, as residents of a fallen world, we should expect to suffer, and at times, that suffering will impact our sexuality. Despite these inevitable... Read More

Suffering And Sexuality

There are two things that you should expect, both as a human being and as a follower of Jesus Christ: You should expect to suffer, and you should expect suffering to impact your sexuality. That's a discouraging and potentially awkward way to start, isn't it? Keep reading - I pray you'll find hope at the end! Here are a few ways you can expect to suffer sexually: You will suffer through the temptation to take your sexual desires – which God hardwired you with -... Read More

The Unlimited Plan

If you spend any time watching television, you’re bound to have seen commercials from the major phone networks offering unlimited plans What an attractive offer. No restrictions, no limits, nothing to get in between you and the way you want to use your device. Maybe that works for a smartphone. But if you want to live realistically and productively as a sinful human being in a fallen world, it’s absolutely critical that you humbly admit your limits. Every person is subject... Read More

Small And Safe

I live in Philadelphia, and the Eagles are headed to the Super Bowl! After their latest win, the city erupted in celebration. (You probably saw some of the crazy videos online.) The scene in my city from last Sunday reminded me of something I saw years ago. After a big sports win, I was in the middle of a huge and boisterous crowd. Probably many of them had had too much to drink. They were coming out of the stadium, with celebratory grabbing, shoving, and high-fiving all over the place.... Read More

The Doctor's Office

Over the past few years, I've been to the doctor's office more times than I would like to count. I don't like seeing the doctor, because it's a reminder that my health is out of my control. But there's another reason I don't like seeing the doctor - the dreaded waiting room. I don't know about you, but I like to be very productive and efficient with my schedule. Few things in life annoy me more than wasted time. And in the doctor's dreaded waiting room, wasted... Read More

Two Words You Will Never Hear

It is such a comfort to me, such a source of hope and strength and daily joy. It gives me reason to get up in the morning and to press on even when I am discouraged and weak and lonely and afraid. It gives me reason to face with courage the struggles within and the difficulties without. It reminds me that I can stand before You as I am, completely unafraid and ask of You what I have asked before and will ask again: Your forgiveness and Your help. What gives me... Read More

Keep Reading Your Bible

I'm sure by now that you've received emails, Facebook ads, or push notifications encouraging you to start (or continue) a Bible reading plan for 2018. I love how technology has evolved to place the Word of God in front of us all the time! But, if you're anything like me - easily distracted with a fickle heart - reading the Bible this year consistently will be a challenge. So today, I want to give you five motivational reasons to open the Bible when you don't feel like it.... Read More

How To Make 2018 Great

The calendar has flipped from 2017 to 2018, which means many people are three days into their New Year's resolution. (Many people have also lost their desire to keep going!) Is change important? Is commitment essential? Of course! But the reality is that few individuals have made immediate and significant life changes because of a New Year's resolution. Biblical Christianity, which has the gospel of Jesus Christ at the center, simply doesn't rest its hope in big moments of... Read More

A Pleasurable Christmas

Did you have a pleasurable Christmas? I love Christmas. I love Christmas because it reminds me of the life-changing spiritual implications of the birth of Christ, and I also love Christmas because of created pleasures that accompany it! (Cookies, decorations, meals, spending time with family) I want to close out this season of Advent devotionals by reminding you that the birth of Christ is deeply connected to pleasure in the heart of God. There's one verse in Isaiah 53 that says it... Read More

Two Life-Changing Announcements

It was the most important event ever, accompanied by the most important song ever, containing the most important announcement ever. "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom He is pleased!" (Luke 2:14) This very familiar, one-sentence hymn defines our need, and in defining our need, defines the mission of that baby in the manger. There are two words I want you to meditate on this Christmas: glory and peace. Advent Announces Glory Imagine... Read More
