Living Your Best Life

There’s no shortage of self-help literature and social media posts teaching us how to live our best life. The Bible does the same. Although, instead of helping to make the most of us, God’s Word provides us with a roadmap to live our best, God-glorifying life right here, right now. This God-glorifying “best life” never happens by accident; it is never the path of least resistance. It requires intentionality, and constantly reminding yourself of these Biblical... Read More

Ministry Is Life And Life Is Ministry

If you are living in a broken world as a sinner among sinners, then every situation, location, and relationship you encounter requires ministry. What is ministry? It’s not just the calling of the paid professionals, nor limited to scheduled activities on your calendar. In biblical terms, ministry is not about a time, a place, or a job description. It is a heartfelt willingness to respond to the spiritual need that God puts in your path, anytime, anyplace. This certainly includes... Read More

Proactive And Thankful

Last week I wrote how many of us will feel confused and powerless for periods of our life. It’s the reality of living in a fallen world with broken people. These moments are painful, yet necessary and helpful. They expose our functional level of faith in God - our capacity to truly leave things up to him - and they provide us with an opportunity to mature in our faith. If we respond biblically during seasons when life makes little or no sense, we can experience spiritual blessing in... Read More

Confused And Powerless

Are you living through a period of life when you don't understand what God is doing, and you can't seem to improve your situation, location, or relationships? Maybe you don't feel utterly helpless, but you feel something like this: Wanting to honor the Lord and do what he says is right, despite others doing what is wrong and thriving. Frustrated that life isn't going your way, and that what you desire is often a dream and rarely a reality. Confused at why God has... Read More

Hope For Today, Because Of Tomorrow

When you woke up this morning, what gave you hope? Maybe a better way of asking the same question is: When you woke up this morning, where did you look for security? For many well-intentioned followers of Jesus, we have mistakenly built our houses of hope on sinking sand. Without even knowing it, we load all our hope for life onto our spouse, children, career, house, retirement account, social status, or ministry calling. Now, there is nothing inherently wrong with appreciating people,... Read More

Is Christ In Your Christianity?

There are some blunt, tell-it-like-it-is passages in the Bible. One that comes to mind is 1 John 2:19 - "They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us." (ESV) This is not merely a historical recounting by John, but a warning for us today: We must resist defining Christianity as anything other than a deep devotion to Christ, the fruit of which is a lifestyle of daily worship of him and active service in his kingdom. We must... Read More

A Lamp And A Light

When was the last time you needed to use a flashlight? I'm guessing your answer will include some variation of "dark" or "darkness". As a sinner living with other sinners in a fallen world, you encounter darkness every day. While you may experience Instagram-worthy, sunny day picnic lunches, the reality is that life is more of a midnight walk through the woods. On any given day, you probably encounter more darkness than you do truth - both internally, and... Read More

How Many Days Until Easter?

I hope that your church pulled out all the stops for a raucous celebration of the Resurrection of our Lord! For followers of Jesus Christ, Easter Sunday is the single most important day in history. Without it, there would be no reason for our faith. The Apostle Paul writes that "if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain." (1 Corinthians 15:14) So I certainly hope that Easter Sunday is the biggest and best day on your church calendar.... Read More

Why I Love Easter

I love Easter. I love the celebratory music we sing at church. I love the passages of Scripture we read during worship. Most of all, I love the visual image of the Empty Tomb. In one culminating and specific moment in history, Jesus Christ summarizes and finalizes the salvation narrative. There are 6 things in particular that I love about the Empty Tomb. 1. The Empty Tomb reveals that God is faithful. Centuries earlier, after Adam and Eve rebelled, God promised that he would... Read More

The Doctrine Of Creation

This devotional is adapted from my new book, Sex In A Broken World: How Christ Redeems What Sin Distorts Your Bible begins with four carefully selected words, four words that I would argue are perhaps the most important words in all of Scripture. "In the beginning, God..." With these words, everything in your life - including sex - is given its shape, purpose and meaning. Genesis 1:1 tells you that your life is not about you; it's about the Creator. It's... Read More
