Back To School

It's that time of year again. College students are settling into their dorms, high schoolers are finishing up their summer reading, moms and dads are making lunches and stuffing backpacks, and stores are marketing their newest "back to school" items. I have long since graduated school and so have my children, but every August and September, God uses this season to remind me of an extremely important spiritual question: Am I approaching life as a student? For followers of... Read More

Do You Actually Need It?

When was the last time you said aloud, or at least thought to yourself, "I need that [fill in the blank] in my life..."? Perhaps, for you, it would mean living in a certain location. Maybe it's a specific job that you've always dreamed of, or a certain salary figure. Maybe it's a relationship or status to pursue - to be a spouse, a parent, a grandparent, a CEO, an elected politician, a senior pastor, or whatever. The word 'need' is one of the most inaccurate... Feeling Stuck?

We spend a lot of our lives stuck ... at least, we feel as if we're stuck. We drive to work and get stuck in traffic. We finally arrive, only to remember that we're stuck in a frustrating job. We bump into someone at church and get stuck in conversation. Maybe because the church we've joined is stuck in controversy. Maybe we're stuck with an underperforming mutual fund. Or stuck with a body that just can't stay healthy. Or stuck with extended family members who... Read More

Run and Hide

Humanity loves to celebrate acts of valor. Each year, dozens of books are written and dozens of movies are scripted to shine the spotlight on a hero who stood courageously in the face of danger. When everyone else ran and hid, one warrior defied evil, saved the day, and gave hope to the world! Why are these storylines so popular? One reason may be that, deep down, we all want to be the hero that we know we aren't capable of being. No matter how tough or strong we think we are, we run... Read More

Worth The Wait

When was the last time you felt like giving up in the middle of something difficult? A week ago, I shared that many of us feel overwhelmed before even starting something challenging. When we sense God's call, we typically measure the size of the task ahead, and we measure our previous track record. Many times, though, we forget to calculate that God will accompany us wherever he sends us, so we inaccurately measure our full potential. But what about after we've taken that first... Read More

I Can't Do It

When was the last time you felt nervous or overwhelmed with something looming on the horizon of your life? When was the last time you threw your hands up in despair and said, "I can't do it!" Maybe it was before a job interview or a big presentation at work that you couldn't afford to mess up. Maybe it was on the morning of your wedding. Maybe it was waiting on the results of a serious medical test for you or a loved one. Or perhaps it was right before a mundane moment... Read More

The Trap of Pleasing People

I was a young pastor. I was doing everything I could to develop the teaching gift that God had given me. I knew that my preaching wasn't perfect, and I knew I needed to gain experience, but I wasn't that bad of a preacher, right? Wrong, at least for one. There was a critical man in our congregation who never seemed to be satisfied with my sermons, no matter how I approached them. One evening he came up to me and said, "Paul, your preaching is killing us." What a way to... Read More

Someday I Will...

When was the last time you thought, "Someday, I'll [...]" before filling in the blank with a goal for your future? Maybe one of these will apply: Someday I'll get a job I actually enjoy. Someday I'll get myself in good physical health. Someday I'll go back to school and get that degree. Someday I'll get our family out of debt. Someday I'll find that special person to marry. Someday I'll join a good church where I fit in. Someday... Read More

Hide Not Your Face

It's perhaps the most comforting and mysterious truth in the Christian faith: God will never hide his face from us. I love what David writes in Psalm 27: "Hide not your face from me. Turn not your servant away in anger, O you who have been my help. Cast me not off; forsake me not, O God of my salvation!" (ESV) What a comforting thing it is for every Christian to know that they'll never see the back of God's head. He'll never turn his back on us, never walk... Read More

Afraid of the Unknown

Today's devotional has been adapated from a new post I wrote celebrating 10 years of Paul Tripp Ministries, Inc. Read The Full Post... It was one of the hardest decisions I ever made. I loved my work at The Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation (CCEF), but God was producing a restlessness in my heart. It became clear that He was calling me to something else, so in June of 2006, we launched Paul Tripp Ministries, Inc. (In case you’re wondering, we chose that... Read More
